Chinese-Maldives cooperation along the Belt and Road initiative on Tsinghua Campus

On December the 1st, Tsinghua Ambassador Talks welcomed the Ambassador of the Republic of Maldives to China, Mr. Mohamed Faisal, who delivered an interactive lecture about the Chinese-Maldives cooperation along the Belt and Road initiative on Tsinghua Campus.

 

The Ambassador Faisal began his lecture explaining the history and culture of the country since the 12th century when the Maldives archipelago adopted the Islam and emerged as a sultanate.

 

Mr. Faisal gave a brief introduction about the current political and economic situation in the Maldives and highlighted the role of tourism and trading on the country’s development. He pointed out that currently one of the biggest challenges that The Maldives faces is to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change. Thus, he pointed out the Maldives government has taken a leading role in the international forums to formulate and implement joined strategies to address the world’s environmental problems.

 

  

The Ambassador concluded his lecture examining the significant areas of cooperation between China and the Maldives under the framework of the “One Belt and One Road” initiative, and sharing his memories from his three-years experience in Beijing.

 

The talk concluded with a long and exciting Q&A session about the proposed projects and increasing cooperation between China and the countries in the Indian Ocean region.
