IR Student Committee Elections Draw to a Close

Faculty student body coordinator Professor Zhang Lihua gave an account of the student committee's past. The International Relations faculty's Student Committee was preceded by the International Studies Student Committee, which was established in December 2005, with elections held every year. After the International Relations faculty was established in 2009, the Student Committee initiated and enacted the Student Committee Duty Guidelines, and in 2010 proceeded to draft the International Relations Faculty Handbook for New Students. In the following years, the Student Committee made a substantial contribution to student life through activities such as the organization of the Graduate Student Discussion Forum, student cultural exchanges, sporting events, hiking trips and the New Year's Party. The Committee has played an important role in reinforcing the warmth and cohesion of the International Relations faculty.

The IR faculty party branch secretary Professor Zhang Chuanjie gave a speech on the importance of interaction between Chinese and foreign students, and building a united international student body. He praised the Student Committee for its good work, encouraged students to further integrate and take part in faculty events in order to raise their overall ability.

Class president Cao Jinxu gave a report of the Student Committee's work over the preceding year. Electoral candidates each gave a speech, and all in attendance chose 5 candidates via an anonymous vote. Theyexpressed their hope that the new candidates would continue the work of the previous year's Committee and live up to their responsibilities.

On December 2nd, Professor Zhang Lihua hosted the new student Committee's first meeting, and appointed the 7 new members their roles via a democratic dialogue:

Class President: Alex Nasr

Vice-Class Presidents: Wang Ken and Victor Cadena

Academic Coordinator: Sodu

Culture and Arts Coordinator: Zhou Xia Yi Ding

Sporting Events Coordinator: Kevin Changnin Em

Student Welfare Coordinator: Li Jiayuan

This year's Student Committee election was notable for several reasons:

This is the first time that an Election Committee was established.Under the supervision of Professor Zhang Chuanjie and Professor Zhang Lihua, the Election Committee was chosen from the previous year's Student Committee and made the planning and process of the elections more standard than in the past. This is also the first time that a Student Committee member hosted the event, which shows that the student body is taking greater ownership of the Student Committee election process.

This is also the first time that a student of Tibetan ethnicity has been appointed to the Student Committee. Sodu, our faculty's only student from the Tibetan Autonomous Region, was elected Academic Coordinator. In addition, this is the first time that an international student has been appointed as Class President. Alexander Nasr, a graduate student from Canada, was unanimously voted to the Student Committee, and appointed class president.

We wish this year's Student Committee the best of luck!
