Lecture on Visuality in International Relations held at Department of International Relations

On the afternoon of November 20th, Dr. Nadine Godehardt, from German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA), gave a vivid lecture to faculty members and students of Department of  International Relations. The topic was about the Post-structuralism and the relevant study of Visuality in International Relations. The lecture was moderated by Asst. Prof. Zhang Chuanjie, and Asst. Prof. Tang Xiaoyang took active part in the lecture as a commentator. Approximately 20 students from home and abroad attended the lecture.

In the first part of the lecture, Dr. Goderhardt defined the word “discourse” in politics with regard to Post-structuralism and analyzed its meaning in international relations. In the second part, she introduced her current study—the analysis of visual representations of China in the forms of pictures and videos in different media, including Der Spiegel from Germany , the Economist and Dialogue of CCTV 9. She believes that each representation leads to different political strategies towards China. After the lecture, Dr. Tang gave comments and the audience had a heated discussion.
