Chinese-Brazilian relations in the 21st century

The Brazilian Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, H.E. Mr. Marcos Caramuru de Paiva, visited Tsinghua University November 1st, 2017, to participate in the Tsinghua Ambassador Talks series. His Excellency was appointed Ambassador of Brazil to the People’s Republic of China in 2016. Prior to assuming this position, Mr. Caramuru de Paiva was Chairman of KEMU Consulting Service (2011- 2016), Consul General in Shanghai (2008-2011), Ambassador to Malaysia (2004- 2008), President of the Financial Activities Control Council (2003), Deputy Minister for International Affairs at the Ministry of Finance (1996- 2002) and Executive Director of the World Bank (1993- 1996).

 

The students from the Tsinghua had the opportunity to learn from an Ambassador who has a mature experience in international institutions, who held high level diplomatic positions in different countries and the lived in China for many years. The Ambassador discussed a variety of topics related to international affairs, from global order to the effects of some of Chinese foreign policies.

 

 

After his lecture, there was a very dynamic Q&A session. Some of the topics discussed were regarding the Chinese-Brazilian relations and the economic development of Brazil. Ambassador Caramuru argued that both countries, Brazil and China, have created very strong ties in the last two decades, especially in the economic sphere. China became the largest trading partner of Brazil and Chinese firms are investing large volumes of resources in Brazil.

 

This session of the Tsinghua Ambassador Talks, counted with the participation of Associate Professor Tang Xiaoyang, from the Department of International Relations; Mr. Eduardo Siebra, Secretary at the Embassy of Brazil; and more than 30 students from different programs at Tsinghua and different nationalities.
