Professor Wu Dahui Speaks at the Developing Country Studies Workshop

 

Developing Country Studies (DCS) Workshop welcomed its first speaker, Professor Wu Dahui of the Department on International Relations on December 3, 2012.

"If you can't go to the target country at least twice per year, how could you say that you know deeply about the country?" Wu Dahui said at the first lecture of the Developing Country Studies Workshop.

"As a scholar focusing on the developing country studies, " Wu suggested the doctoral students of DCS, "you should integrate into the local community of your target country, and search for the information which you can't find in present books."

Wu gave his speech on the topic of Foreign Policy of Central Asian States. He described the rights and choices of the five mid-Asia countries in the foreign affairs field. Then he said the mid-Asia countries holds the total different attitudes toward USA, Russia and China, "They consider USA as the balancing power, China as the economic connection, but Russia as the priority direction."

Wu had a conversation with the DCS doctoral students after the speech on the questions whether trade or security is more important in relations between China and the central Asian countries and how to integrate into the local society of the developing countries for area studies scholars.

It is the first lecture of the DCS workshop, which is a biweekly event. Prof. Liu Huiqin from the Graduate School, Mr. Xia Guangzhi from the International Affairs Office and Professor Zhang Chuanjie of the Department of International Relations were also present at the workshop.
